The wood collection was conceived from a need for a new table in our new home.
I did not see anything in the marketplace that fit my visual, philosophic or functional needs, so I decided to make my own table. Working with my very skilled-woodworker friend, Scott Milikan, we made the first table with pearls inlaid into cherry wood.
Pleased but never satisfied, I have since made more tables and coffee tables, as well as benches and chairs looking to create functional wood that also reflects the same poetic and formal qualities that I demand from my artwork.
Most of the wood I use comes from my dear friend Kevin Yardley’s company, Diamond Teak, and his 1000-acre sustainable tree farm in the rainforest of Costa Rica.
I travel with Kevin to his factory on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica where I choose wood, lay out my designs and oversee the finishing. My visions would not come to fruition without the benefit of the workers’ experience and astonishing woodworking skills.
Some of the work is made in Pennsylvania at Cider Press Woodworks Studio, under the careful eyes of Scott Milikan.
All of the wood is green certified and sustainably farmed.
I love the challenge of making the wood come alive to function both as objects to look at and furniture that shapes peoples’ lives.
My desire is to create poetic, philosophic, highly functional furniture that will stand the physical and artistic tests of time, not unlike the qualities I try to infuse into my nonfunctional artwork in metal, ceramic and glass.
