NYC: Steve Tobin Talk — New York Roots
As part of the Garment District Alliance’s fall arts programming, artist Steve Tobin joined Cheryl Hageman, Deputy Director of MTA Arts & Design, for a public conversation about Tobin’s monumental installation New York Roots.
The talk invited audiences to look beneath the surface—both literally and metaphorically—exploring how the sculpture’s dynamic steel “roots” mirror the unseen systems that sustain cities and communities. Tobin discussed his creative process, his evolution from casting to formed steel, and the symbolism of roots as a metaphor for connection, resilience, and renewal.
The Q&A, led by Cheryl Hageman, drew inspiration from her recent book highlighting 100 permanent public art commissions across New York City. Her thoughtful questions sparked lively dialogue between the audience and the artist.
Following the discussion, visitors experienced New York Roots firsthand across two Garment District plazas. Seven large-scale sculptures, some rising two stories high, framed the skyline with sinuous, anthropomorphic forms that seemed to dance with the city’s rhythm.
