China: “XUNHUI: A Return Toward the Future”
XUNHUI: A Return Toward the Future
Featuring Steve Tobin · Beidaihe, China · The 1st Resea Coastal Public Art Season
World-renowned artist Steve Tobin brings his iconic, elemental forms to the shores of Beidaihe for XUNHUI: A Return Toward the Future, a landmark exhibition along the golden coastline of China’s first Resea Coastal Public Art Season.
Spanning a 3-kilometer stretch of beach, XUNHUI features 18 site-specific artworks by international artists, blurring the boundary between art and environment. At the heart of the show is a major solo retrospective of Tobin’s work — from his towering steel roots to intricate pieces in glass, ceramic, bronze, and paint — housed just steps from the sea.
Inspired by the Chinese characters for “tracing” and “returning,” XUNHUI invites viewers to slow down, wander, and rediscover their connection to the natural world. In place of white walls, artworks are set among dunes, salt air, and shifting tides — creating an immersive experience where art is not just seen, but stumbled upon.
For Tobin, whose work often reveals the hidden forces of nature, this exhibition is a perfect fit: a chance to place his sculptures where they belong — not in isolation, but in dialogue with the earth, the sea, and the people passing by.
